The first proposal

We did decide in advance that we would get engaged on New Year's Day. 

That means she knew the question was coming, and I had a pretty good idea what the answer might be.

That didn't mean it was going to be easy.

So, just after midnight, I dropped to one knee.

She said "not now!"

I said "I'm just practicing."

That was the first attempt.
